Erling Haaland sets new record for goals in a Premier League season

With his most recent goal for Manchester City against West Ham, Erling Haaland broke the record for most goals scored in a Premier League season.

The 22-year-old Norwegian prodigy scored City’s second goal of the contest by chipping the ball over Lukasz Fabianski for his 35th goal of a fantastic season.

And with 34 goals combined in 1993–94 and 1994–95, Andy Cole and Alan Shearer, who had previously held the top spot, were surpassed by him.

Given that Cole and Shearer attained their totals when the top-flight season consisted of 42 instead of 38 games, Haaland’s achievement is even more remarkable.

Unbelievably, the Citizens still have five league games left to play this season, with relegation-threatened Leeds the Etihad’s next guests on Saturday.

That means Haaland still has plenty of time to add to his incredible total and perhaps even get close to breaking one record that is still unattainable.

Dixie Dean of Everton scored a record-breaking 63 goals in all competitions during the 1927–28 season.

Despite the fact that Haaland now has 51 goals and that City are still in contention on three fronts, that is still the highest total of any player in England’s top division.

It is not impossible for the former Borussia Dortmund star to surpass Dean’s total considering that there are still five Premier League games, at least two Champions League matches, and an FA Cup final left this season.
