Manchester United won the Carabao Cup on Sunday, Feby 26, 2023, defeating Newcastle in a commanding 2-0 victory. This was the club’s first trophy in six years. It was an incredible feat by a group of United players who were thought to be far below the caliber of their great forebears and surely humble given their current trophy drought.
One of the most successful football teams in the world, Manchester United has amassed an incredible number of trophies over the past 100 years. But for the past few years, their trophy cabinet has been virtually empty. Only two trophies, the 2017 Europa Cup and Carabao Cup, had been won by them in the preceding six years, but a hungry fan base rapidly forgot about these victories.
When returning Bruno Guimaraes fouled Marcus Rashford on the left, Shaw sent in a beautiful free-kick, which Casemiro met with a strong header to beat Karius.
The Brazilian punched the air when it was given the all-clear after a tense wait to check an offside.

As United slowed the pace in opposition to a team that Ten Hag had termed “annoying” for their time-wasting antics in the buildup, Howe’s team started to appear more promising.
Newcastle was unable to convert its possession into clear-cut chances because Wan-Bissaka, who was introduced with great fanfare, and Lisandro Martinez proved to be immovable.
As play grew strained with Howe’s team pursuing a goal, Karius made a good stop to prevent Rashford from blasting home from a distance and dealt with a long-range Wan-Bissaka attempt.
Newcastle’s requests for penalties were denied, and substitute Jacob Murphy’s breath-taking long-range shot narrowly missed the target.
When the game came to a close, captain Harry Maguire was introduced, the Glazers were once again the target of chants, Karius denied Bruno Fernandes, and De Gea set a new United record for clean sheets with 181 shutouts.
